Brief One: Bias in Cable News
In this era of social media and technology, the news is spread in seconds. While the speedy delivery of news and information is not inherently bad, the spread of biased and tainted news is. Every day we allow ourselves to listen to whatever news is "trending". Bias in cable news, or any news, has a heavy influence on political and personal beliefs, which can drastically affect someone's ability to understand current events.
The definition of media bias is described as, "when journalists or news organizations allow their own opinions to affect the news that they report and the way that they report it." A certain amount of trust should be maintained between the reporter and viewer, with the absolute confidence that a biased point of view will not deter the message.
In most cable news platforms, bias lies within the message. Whether the news debuts from a far-right side bias like Fox News or an extreme left side bias such as CNN, will most likely be featured in the news.
CNN has openly displayed their liberal beliefs throughout their reports and their continued support for President Joe Biden, almost as much as their distaste for Donald Trump.
While Trump slander may be one of the more common occurrences in today's news, CNN goes above and beyond to attack the former president's every move. This example of media bias demonstrates the dangers of tainted news, aired to influence a worldwide audience.
CNN and their outlandish headlines are featured on the Media Bias Chart and the AllSides bias rating as a high bias leaning left.
These media bias charts and websites allow audiences to understand and gain insight into the influence of our television channels.
